About Us
Indie Energy was formed in order to help design and build a renewable energy economy and a renewed society. This was in the Spring of 2006, just as the U.S. Council of Mayors was beginning to adopt the "2030 Challenge" to make cities "carbon neutral". Heating, cooling, and ventilation of buildings accounted for 48% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. The price tag in the U.S. would be over $326 billion by 2007, and would continue to grow. Something had to be done, and it was clear that new, innovative enterprises could make a big difference in helping us break out of old patterns.
We decided that we would grow a triple bottom-line company based on developing under-developed renewable natural and human resources in a way that would be 100% sustainable at a local, grass-roots, level.
Our research pointed to a clear conclusion: The highest efficiency, greatest leverage, local renewable energy is geothermal.
And the greatest leverage, under-developed human resource are the under-employed members of our society who live in cities - just where we would need to hire and train a new renewable energy workforce (which subsequently has been termed "green collar or green jobs").
Our simple equation became: Local Geo + Local People = Economic, Environmental, and Social Profit. This was the genesis of Indie Energy.
Indie Energy geothermal-based clean energy building systems deliver dramatic energy savings, reduced carbon emissions, and healthier indoor air using the natural energy right below our feet. Indie Energy geothermal building systems save between 50% and 80% on annual heating, cooling, ventilation, and hot water costs in commercial, residential, and public buildings.
Natural energy from the sun and earth. The principal behind Indie Energy geothermal building systems is based on the cycle of renewable energy in our natural world. Your system harvests solar energy stored in the earth to provide a complete heating system in the winter. Then it uses the ground to remove the heat from your building in the summer to give you an extremely efficient cooling system. Indie Energy systems completely eliminate the need for fossil fuels in your building. You end up gaining independence from out-of-control energy prices by eliminating the use of natural gas, and by only using one unit of electricity from the grid to move four units of energy in and out of your building for heating and cooling. For every one dollar you put into the system, you get four dollars of energy back.
How do we do it? Indie Energy delivers turnkey geothermal building systems by combining design engineering, drilling, interior build-outs, commissioning, and intelligent controls. Our goal is to assure the quality of the system while delivering it on-time and within budget. Indie Energy has the fastest growing urban geothermal drilling operation in the U.S. Indie Energy also has one of the few engineering studios completely devoted to whole-building modeling, design optimization of geothermal-based mechanical systems, engineered geothermal energy-fields, and advanced metering and controls technology.
